Closing the Intention Gap: A Conversation on Montessori Parent Education

Grounded in survey data, adult learning research, and the voices of school leaders

For over a century, Montessori schools have poured effort into parent education, yet many keep asking: why doesn't it reach more families?

The Closing the Intention Gap thesis takes up that question. Drawing on survey data and adult learning research, it argues that parent education is really adult education, and that families understand Montessori best not through abstract philosophy but through the daily life of their own child. The Intention Gap is the distance between what schools try to teach and what parents actually want to understand.

This isn't a lecture or a demo. It's a conversation. Isabella Cai, Founder of Y Montessori and Publisher of Montessori Data Lens, brings the research behind the Intention Gap, and a small panel of Montessori school leaders share how it plays out in their classrooms every day. She comes at it through data and research. They live it with parents. Together we compare notes and share what we learn as a community.

We'll talk about:

  • Why parent education so often doesn't land, and the reframe that it's really adult education
  • What the Intention Gap looks like in a real school
  • Why photo sharing builds connection but rarely carries real understanding
  • What the benefits are for children when parent education works
  • What a year of data reveals about engagement, and whether attendance ever tells us parents truly understood, and more

Whether you're a school leader, administrator, or guide, come with your questions. This is the discussion the thesis was meant to start.

Montopia: The Working Version of the Model

Montopia is the platform Y Montessori built to deliver individualized parent education at scale. Each of the three components of the model has a concrete form in the product. Each component does the work the thesis describes, in a way teachers can sustain inside their teaching day and parents can absorb inside the small windows they actually have.

Isabella Cai is the founder of Y Montessori, the parent company of Montessori Data Lens, the research publication for the Montessori field from which this thesis is drawn, and Montopia, the parent education platform that implements the model this thesis describes. She came to Montessori as a parent: her two daughters, Anne and Luna, both attend Montessori school. She came to this work after homeschooling them through primary Montessori during the pandemic.

Her professional background is in data analytics. She spent eight years at Qualcomm working in data analysis, data visualization, and data program management. She holds a graduate degree from the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy, a program known for its quantitative rigor and emphasis on data-driven analysis.

Through Y Montessori, she leads two interconnected bodies of work. Montessori Data Lens is the research arm, partnered with the UC San Diego Data Science Department. Montopia is the platform arm, used across a network of Montessori schools. Isabella can be reached at isabellacai@ymontessori.com.
